Freedom From Religion
Former lecturer of human rights and antidiscrimination lawyer at Canberra University, Meg Wallace will be launching her new book Freedom from Religion: Rethinking Article 18 on 5.00pm Saturday 4th of July 2015 at Embiggen Books. Please RSVP to events at embiggenbooks dot com or call on 9662 2062.
Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights provides for ‘freedom of religion and belief’. In her book, Meg Wallace argues that as it stands, Article 18 fosters the privileging of particular religious beliefs, hindering the equal right of others to exercise the same right. This is most obviously seen in extremist situations but is also ubiquitous in liberal democracies. Freedom From Religion illuminates this greatly misunderstood area of international law and human rights, and proposes a means of maximising the belief rights of everyone.
