The Big Ideas Book club was formed to explore books that are built around big ideas or themes, specifically where there may be a science element to it. As organisers and members of the club, we’re very interested in learning about the world and believe that discussion and reading are probably the most important thing we can do to engage in this. We read fiction one month and nonfiction the next (see the list of books we have read since opening in Melbourne). Some people only go to one or the other but an increasing number are seeing value in going to both. So how do you join? Read the book and come. Try to let us know in advance (on the Facebook or Meet Up pages or in the store or via email or call us on 9662 2062) and then come. It’s that simple.

 

We encourage the voicing of opinions on the books, and don’t mind one bit if we don’t all agree on them! Disagreement is often the backbone of an interesting discussion.

 

  • Hosts: George Aranda (Science Book a Day), Warren Bonett (Mr Embiggen), Kirsty Bruce (Mrs Embiggen), and Kirsty Jones.
  • Cost: Free (though we do operate a donation box to help pay for the wine, water and dips.
  • Venue: Embiggen Books 197-203 Little Lonsdale St Melbourne. At some point this year we will also begin hosting some of the club nights at The Royal Society of Victoria’s premises just down the road. More details on this to follow.
  • When: We meet on the last Wednesday of every month except December.
  • Group size: Varies 10-25.

  • Books: Although we run this club you don’t have to buy the books from us (though this would be nice of course) but we do offer a book clubbers discount on book club books.
